In a grand swoop of his double edged sword, Governor Rod Blagojevich stepped up to line item veto "pork" in the long awaited state budget just after signing legislation giving lawmakers (and political luminaries like himself) a 10% pay increase. This not-so-stunning display of stubborn tunnel vision on the part of the Gov shows heartwarming dedication to Illinois' sordid political tradition.
Meanwhile, CTA riders grapple with the imminent service cuts and fare hikes resulting from the $0 funding increase included in the budget. Despite frequent public meetings replete with pleas for assistance and endless tales of commuter hell, the state of Illinois has decided to push the financial burden of the CTA's gross mismanagement off on the completely defeated public.
The crumbling transit system, coupled with the visionary plan for an on-land casino in Chicago, takes us one step further from "world class city" status and inches us ever closer to "Reno of the Midwest" status.

Cheers. |
